Utility Meters
Arguably the most important part of the smart grid, utility meters represent the gateway between the generation/transmission/distribution portion of the grid and the electricity consumer. Traditional utility meters are termed "dumb" in that they simply measure electricity consumed without providing any remote ability to access the data being measured. According to data produced by IMS Research, around 95% of the installed-based of electricity meters in 2010 was "dumb".
A key trend in the evolution of the smart grid is the roll-out of "smart meters".
IMS Research believes that utility meters will represent one of the most active areas of smart grid investment over the next decade as they provide the critical link between generation and consumption that is needed to enable smart grid type functionality.
